Walking from the bus station to our inn, we stumbled upon a statue in a small square. It was a monument to science fiction great H.G. Wells, who wrote War of the Worlds in 1895 while living in Woking. That novel, one of the earliest alien invasion novels (Martians invade Earth), and its author weren’t remotely on my mind when planning this trip.

We came to Woking to visit my niece, who recently moved here. I found a sweet little inn for our visit, and it turns out that The Wheatsheaf is mentioned briefly in Wells’ novel. Fun to think it was around 130 years ago.

These unexpected discoveries are the one of the serendipitous pleasures of travel.
