… is always on the verge of happening! That’s what we danced to today at Kellie Chambers’ Nia studio.
Nia, a dance fusion that is my (almost) daily practice, marries movement with music that spans a broad range. It can be gentle, meditative. It can be energetic, athletic. As I dance, it can send me into quiet awareness of breathing, and it can fuel a burst of happy energy.
Today we danced the routine “U,” which has a little of everything. I hadn’t danced it in a while and had forgotten how it crescendos with Michael Bernard Beckwith’s upbeat “U R the Answer” and its over-the-top joyous lyrics: “Something wonderful is knocking, knocking, knocking on your heart!” and “You! You! You are the answer!”
Yes, I know. Written on the screen like this, it may seem corny. I don’t care. I love dancing it. I love considering how I may be able to help something wonderful happen. I love how my feet feel doing the side-step cha-cha-cha moves. And I especially love the joy on the faces of all the dancers around me.
I sound like the pied piper of Nia. Really, though, I am the pied piper of joy of movement. I wish for everyone a physical activity that floods body, mind and soul with joy.
